Tobiah has taught djembe in Los Angeles and Chicago in venues such as the Old Town School of Folk Music, the Claremont Dance Theatre, and the Waldorf School. In Novemeber of 2004, he arranged, taught, and performed a set of Afro Cuban songs with the Chicago Children's Choir. He has a BA in Political Science from Pomona College. As a performer he has played with many different groups, touring the United States with the California-based group BalanduguKan, a highly acclaimed West African drum ensemble, and Dahui, a Chicago-based ensemble. In Guinea, he has studied with Baro master drummer Mansa Cameo, and in Conakry with Ali Sylla of Percussions de Guinea and has also studied percussion and folkloric music in Cuba. He is currently playing and performing with Juan Fuentes’ “Okokan.” Film has been a lifelong interest for Tobiah: he recently finished an internship at Kartemquin Films of Chicago. In 1996 he was invited to Washington D.C. to present his documentary video at a national History Fair Convention. For more about his new project Namu!
